Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

Queensland runs two licence layers: an occupational licence for the person doing the plumbing and drainage work, and a contractor licence for the business that takes the job on, and the QBCC issues both.

The occupational licence proves the holder has the skills for the work. The contractor licence proves the business has the financial capacity and training to run jobs properly. Three licence classes matter to household plumbing:

  1. Plumber

covers water supply and fixtures, apart from anything needing its own endorsement.

  2. Drainer

covers drainage work below ground level, including sewers and buried stormwater lines.

  3. Gasfitter

gas work needs a separate licence, spanning installing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying a gas system and its pipework.

Before any gas job begins, you're entitled to ask to sight that licence. Our gas fitting services run under it.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Two bodies share the oversight: the QBCC licenses plumbers and keeps the notifiable work register, while the City of Moreton Bay assesses applications, grants permits and carries out inspections.

Regulated plumbing and drainage work splits into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and a licensed plumber or drainer has to do all three. What lands in your hands depends on the category:

  1. Form 4

after notifiable work, the owner or the person who engaged us receives a copy, and we lodge the notice with the QBCC.

  2. Gas compliance certificate

when gas work on a new installation or alteration finishes, the owner receives it straight away, and a copy goes to the gas network operator within 5 days.

The QBCC's online registers let you confirm a licence, and an address search shows whether a Form 4 has been registered for a property. You can also request a council inspection of notifiable work at any stage.

The Suburbs We Work Across

Our regular run covers Albany Creek and the suburbs around it, from Bunya and McDowall to Brendale, Bridgeman Downs and Eatons Hill. The full catchment sits on the suburbs we cover page.

The work varies with the streets. Backyards bordering the linear parks along the creeks collect tree roots in the sewer lines running through those yards, so drain repairs come up often. Hillside blocks keep stormwater connections busy after summer rain.

Diagnose, Quote, Repair and Test

  1. 1

    You describe the fault

Tell us what's wrong, where, and how urgent it is. A dripping mixer can wait for an appointment; water pouring through a ceiling cannot.

  2. 2

    We diagnose on site

We inspect, test and trace the fault to its source, then explain what we've found before anything gets touched.

  3. 3

    You approve the quote

You'll see a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. Nothing goes ahead until you approve the figure.

  4. 4

    We repair and test

We do the work, then test it: taps run, drains flow, gas lines are checked and certified as the job requires.

  5. 5

    You receive the paperwork

Any Form 4 or gas compliance certificate is handed over, and card and EFTPOS payment on site settles the account once you're happy.

Questions About Our Team

Call (07) 3524 7137

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

A plumber's licence covers work on water supply and fixtures inside and around the house. A drainer's licence covers the drainage side below ground, such as sewers and buried stormwater pipes. Plenty of licence holders carry both classes, so one visit often covers the whole job.

What paperwork do I get after plumbing work in Albany Creek?

Notifiable work earns you a Form 4 copy for your records. Gas work on a fresh install or an alteration also earns a gas system compliance certificate, handed over as soon as the gasfitter finishes. Hold onto both with your property papers.

What does QBCC licensed mean for my Albany Creek plumbing job?

The QBCC issues both licence layers: the occupational licence the tradesperson holds and the contractor licence the business holds. QBCC licensed means both are current, and the QBCC says licensed trades doing regulated work protect your home, your health and your rights.

Does the team work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, we take jobs from owner-occupiers, landlords, tenants and unit owners alike. Approval and payment differ in a rental or a unit complex, so tenants loop in the agent, and unit owners may need body corporate sign-off first.
